Are you a beginner quilter?

Well, so am I.

I’m finding I love this quilting thing. The piecing, the colors, the layouts, and the quilting, tying it all together.

But, I’m also teaching myself how to piece and quilt, and I thought I’d share my knowledge with you.

So…

Let’s start with basics.

This series, quilting basics, is going to help you get started. And the first one is half-square triangles (HST). HST are very versatile and simple, and a great way to start.

Cut List

  • 1- 5 1/2″ x 5 1/2″ light fabric
  • 1- 5 1/2″ x 5 1/2″ dark fabric

Draw a diagonal line in the lighter fabric from one corner to the opposite corner.

Sew 1/4″ down each side of the diagonal line. Cut down diagonal line.

Trim triangles to 5″.

Press toward dark fabric.

And you have 2 half-square triangles (HST).

There’s my first tutorial. Now go try it. if you have any questions, or if something’s not clear, please ask in the comments, and I’ll come back and answer it.

Next week we’ll learn how to make 8 at a time.
