2-Color Irish Chain Quilt – Free Quilt Pattern

posted in: Quilt Pattern, Quilting | 0

Hello friends, welcome back! It’s time for another free quilt pattern! This one is fun, and I’m convinced you are going to love it!

Fabric Requirements

  • 2 1/4 yd of focal fabric
  • 1 yd background fabric
  • 1/2 yd binding fabric

Cut List:

  • From Focal fabric cut:
    • 12 -2 1/2″ x wof (A)
    • 7- 6 1/2″ x wof
      • Sub cut into 41- 6 1/2″ x 6 1/2″ squares (B)
  • From background fabric cut:
    • 13- 2 1/2″ x wof (C)

Fabric Strip Sets

We are going to be making 2 different strip sets. Each set will consist of three different strips. This is where it gets fun and you can mix and match strips.

1- You will need 2- C strips and 1- A strip. Lay them out C-A-C. (D) Make 5 sets.

2- You will need 2- A strips and 1- C strip. Lay them out A-C-A. (E) Make 3 sets.

Sew each strip set together along the long edges. Press towards the C fabric or iron them open.

Take D and lay it on your cutting mat so it’s straight along the lines of one of your mat.

Take the next D and lay it out on top, offsetting it just enough the seams aren’t right on top of each other. Make sure you are laying it along the lines on the mat also.

Lay one E, once again, on top of the second one, offsetting it as well.

Trim off the salvage edges so you’re starting with a nice clean edge.

Cut through all three groups and cut them into 2 1/2″ wide. Cut them all the way down your strip sets.

Each set of 2 1/2″ Wide strips is going to create one 9-Patch. (You should have 2-D, and 1-E that measures 2 1/2″ x 6 1/2″.)

9-Patches

Take each set and lay them out with D on the top and bottom and E is in the middle as shown.

Sew them together pressing towards D. Because of the way we ironed the strip sets, they should nest beautifully together.

Press flat and trim to 6 1/2″ x 6 1/2″.

Repeat with each strip set until you have 40 9-Patches.

2-Color Irish Chain Quilt

It’s time to lay out your quilt.

The quilt will be laid out in a row-by-row fashion.

The first row should start with B and alternate B with your 9-patch all the way across until you have 9 in a row. (Row 1)

The second row should start with a 9-patch and then alternate between 9-patch and B. All the way across until you have 9 blocks. (Row 2)

Alternate Row 1 and Row 2 all the way down until you have 9 rows and you’re ending with Row 1.

Sew each row together pressing towards B.

Then sew all the rows together. Give your quilt a good press and send it off to the longarmer.

Finished size: 54 1/2″ x 54 1/2″.

Finishing Your Quilt

Pick out your quilt back and batting and either quilt on your home machine or send it to the long-arm quilter.

Bind your quilt and the snuggle underneath it!
