If you’ve followed along with my free quilt block journey, you should now have 20 different quilt blocks.
In the video and this blog post, I’m going to walk you through how to put your blocks together 3 different ways, with a couple of variants on them.
Please note that with 20 blocks, the basic layout is going to be 4 wide and 5 down and we are going to find a few different ways of using sashing and piecing to create a few unique ways of putting these together.
First, I want to you to start by laying out your blocks in a 4 by 5 layout. Look at them, rearrange them, decide if you like them that way. Walk away, and then come back and make sure you still like them that way.

Sampler Quilt Layout #1
Now that you have all your blocks laid out, and you like them that way, layout 1 is super simple. Just sew each block row together. And sew the rows together. Give it a good press, and you have a finished quilt.

If you go this route, you will not need any additional fabric and your quilt should finish at 48 1/2″ x 60 1/2″.
You will need 1/2 yd for binding.
Sampler Quilt Layout #2
With this second layout, we are going to add some basic sashing. You will have the option of doing plain sashing, or adding in some corner squares.
Layout 2A- Plain Sashing
Cut List:
- 15- 2 1/2″ x 12 1/2″ Background (A)
- 4- 2 1/2″ x 54 1/2″ Background (B)
- 2- 2 1/2″ x 68 1/2″ Background (C)
- 2- 2 1/2″ x 58 1/2″ Background (D)
Starting with your block layout, you will place A between the blocks in each row so you are alternating block, A, block, A, block ,A, block. Sew rows together and press towards A.

You will then place B between each row. Sew the rows together, pressing towards B.
C and D are a final border. Sew C on each side pressing towards C and then sew D on the top and bottom pressing towards D.
If you go this route your quilt should finish at 58 1/2″ x 72 1/2″.
You will need 1 1/4 yd for sashing and 1/2 yd for binding.
Layout 2B- Sashing with Corner Stones

- 2- 2 1/2″ x 58 1/2″ Background (D)
Starting with your block layout, you will place A between the blocks in each row and column. Where 4-A’s coming together, you will use B as a cornerstone creating a little pop of color.

Sew rows together and press towards A. (Including the sashing only rows)
Sew the rows together, pressing towards the sashing rows.
C and D are a final border. Sew C on each side pressing towards C and then sew D on the top and bottom pressing towards D.
