Flying Geese

We are going to make 1 set of Flying Geese using the No-Waste Flying Geese method.

First, take 1- F and 4- C and make four C/H Flying Geese. You can make them all the same, or mix and match the star legs like I did.

Trim to 4 1/2″ x 8 1/2″.

Make 9 sets of 4 or 36 total.

Quilt Block

The quilt block will be layed out with 9 pieces, creating a 3 x 3 layout.

  • G, Flying Geese, G
  • Flying Geese, Center, Flying Geese
  • G, Flying Geese, G

Trim to 16 1/2″.

Create 9 blocks.

Triangle Quilt

Lay your quilt out in a 3 x 3 pattern.

Now that you have your layout we are going to work with specific blocks to make the sashing fun.

We are going to use the Stitch-n-Flip method to create Churn Dash between the stars.

Corners and Sashing

Take D and draw a line on the diagonal of each piece. Where 4 blocks come together in your layout of the quilt, you will use the stit-n-flip method to sew D onto the corner of each of those blocks.

After you have pressed them back and trimmed of the back two layers, you will have a triangle on the corners where 4 blocks come together.

There will be 4 such intersections.

Once D has been sewn on to the specific blocks, lay your quilt out so that H is between each block and E is is the setting piece. See the churn dash???

Sew the rows together, pressing each row toward H. Sew the rows together.

Final Border

I finished this quilt with a 2″ border of background fabric all the ways around.

Take the strips you set aside for the border and sew them together. Measure the sides of the quilt and cut 2 at that length (should be roughly 51 1/2″). Sew onto each side, press towares the border.

Measure the top and bottom of the quilt, but 2 at that length (should be roughly 54 1/2″), and sew on to top and bottom. Press toward borders.

Give your quilt to a a good press before sending it off to your long arm quilter.

Finishing Your Quilt

Pick out your quilt back and batting and either quilt on your home machine or send it to the long-arm quilter.

Bind your quilt and the snuggle underneath it!
