Cut list:

  • Light: Cut 2- 3 ⅜” Squares (A)
  • Mid: Cut 1- 5 ¼” Square (B)
  • Dark: Cut 1- 5 ¼” Square (C)
  • Bright (Flag): Cut 1- 3 ⅜” Square (D)
  • Contrast (Red): Cut 4- 2 ½” Squares (E)
  • Background:
    • Cut 8- 3” Squares (F)
    • Cut 8- 1 ½” x 2 ½” (G)
    • Cut 8- 1 ½” x 4 ½” (H)

Square w/in a Square

Using A and D to make a Square w/in a square. 

Cut A in half diagonally and use it to frame the D square.

Trim to 4 ½”.

No-Waste Flying Geese

Using B and 4- F, make 4 Flying Geese using the No-Waste Flying Geese method. Trim to 2 ½” x 4 ½”

Using C and 4- F, make 4 Flying Geese using the No-Waste Flying Geese method. Trim to 2 ½” x 4 ½”.

Corner Units – Make 4

Take 1-E and sew a G on opposite sides of the square. Press towards G. (Unit should measure 2 ½” x 4 ½”.)

Then sew a H on the top and bottom of the above unit sew the background fabric is frame E. Press towards H.

Trim to 4 ½”.

Build Your Block

Start by laying out your block.

The flying geese should be pointing away from the center with the C/F unit on the outer edge and the B/F unit underneath. 

Corner units in each corner and the square w/in a square should be in the center. 

First sew the flying geese units together and press toward the B/F unit.

Sew rows together. Press top and bottom rows toward Corner Units and middle row toward Square w/in a Square.

Sew top and bottom rows to the center row and press toward the top and bottom rows.

Trim to 12 ½” x 12 ½”

Change Up the Colors

I wanted to show you this quilt block in a different color way so you can see how it would look if you set it up differently.

The only difference between the 2 blocks is I changed pieces A to background fabric.

Cut List

  • Color 1: Cut 1- 5 ¼” Square (B)
  • Color 2: Cut 1- 5 ¼” Square (C)
  • Color 3: Cut 1- 3 ⅜Color 3” Square (D)
  • Color 4: Cut 4- 2 ½” Squares (E)
  • Background:
    • Cut 8- 3” Squares (F)
    • Cut 8- 1 ½” x 2 ½” (G)
    • Cut 8- 1 ½” x 4 ½” (H)
    • Cut 2- 3 ⅜” Squares (A)

Follow the same instructions above, the pieces are all lettered the same, and you will get this beautiful block. I like how the points on this one all point towards the outer edges.
