Block 4

Now that we have all our pieces, it’s time to put our block together.

In week 1 you learned how to make the Flip-and-Stitch Square in a Square.

In week 2, you learned how to make 2-Color Quarter Square Triangles and you should have made 4 of those with this method.

Week 3 was tip week and we learned how to trim Quarter Square Triangles.

And now… here we are week 4 and it’s time to put our block together.

Block 4

Supply List

  • 1- 4 1/2″ Square-in-a-Square
  • 4- 4 1/2″ Quarter Square Triangles (QST)
  • 4- 4 1/2″ Background fabric

We are going to lay this out in 3 rows:

  • 4 1/2″ Background, 2-Color QST, 4 1/2″ Background
  • 2-Color QST, Square-in-a-Square, 2-Color QST
  • 4 1/2″ Background, 2-Color QST, 4 1/2″ Background

** All Seams should be at 1/4″**

Fold the right piece in each row over, right sides together, onto the piece in the middle. Line up the right seams, and pin into place. Sew.

Press the top and bottom row towards the background corner pieces and the center row toward the center.

Fold the left piece in each row over, right sides together, onto the piece in the middle. Line up the left seams, and pin into place. Sew.

Press the top and bottom row towards the background corner pieces and the center row toward the center diamond.

Now we’re going to sew the three rows together. Place the top row on the middle row and pin.

You should pin in two places to make sure they line up all nicely: the seams where the blocks in each row are connected. The seams should nest nicely, as we pressed them in opposite directions. Sew the two rows together and press open.

Line up the last row, pin in place, and sew. Press open. Make sure you give it a good iron so it’s lying nice and flat.

Measure and Trim

Trim to 12 1/2″ square. The best way to do this is to line up the points of the diamond in the middle with the 6 1/4” line in both directions. Line up the 6 1/4″ vertical line with a diamond point and the center of the QST and the 6 1/4″ horizontal line with a diamond point and the center of the QST. Trim right and top. The vertical and horizontal seams should like at the 4 1/4″ and 8 1/4″ lines, both vertically and horizontally.

Rotate the block 180 degrees, line up the bottom with the 12 1/2″ horizontal line and the left side with the 12 1/2″ vertical line, the middle should still be at the 6 1/4″ point and trim the right side and top.

And there you go.
