Double Flying Geese from Quarter Square Triangles

posted in: Block Basics, Quilting | 0

Welcome! Today we are going to learn how to make a different kind of Double Flying Geese.

This particular technique is from a whole bunch of pieces. You will not have any waste or leftovers. And you can change up the center point on the Double Flying geese.

For this tutorial, we want our unfinished geese to be 3″ x 5 1/2″.

Quarter Square Tirangles

Cut List:

  • 1- 4″ x 4″ Print (A)
  • 1- 4″ x 4″ Background (B)
  • 2- 3 1/2″ x “3 1/2 Print (C)

Take B and draw a line diagonally from corner to corner.

Stack A and B, with right sides together.

Stitch 1/4″ away from each side of the diagonal line.

Cut on line and press toward darker fabric. You should have 2 half-square triangles. (HST)

On the back of one HST draw a line perpendicular to the seam line. Do this by lining up the seam line, with a straight line on your ruler/straight edge. Line the edge of your ruler up with one of the points of your HST.

Next, place C, right side up on the your table. Place HST, right side down, on top of C.

Sew 1/4″ from each side of the line that drew on the back of the one piece.

Cut down the line, and press towards C. Repeat with second HST.

You will end up with 4 Quarter Square Triangles, 2 with one color combination and 2 with the mirrored of that color combination.

Measure and Trim

Trim these to 3″ Square. The center of the block should be at 1 1/2″.

Double Flying Geese from Quarter Square Triangles

Now that we have our Quarter Square Triangles, it’s time to put together our Double Flying Geese.

Take 2 of your QST, you need one of each color combination, and place them so that color A is towards the middle and C is along the outside edges.

Lay them right sides together. Line up the diagonal lines, and pin into place 1/4″ in from the edge. When you sew, you want to sew right where the pin goes through the fabric so that you get nice crisp points on your flying geese.

Sew along A color. Press open. Double flying geese should measure 3″ x 5 1/2″.
