Flower Block – Snowball Technique

posted in: Quilting | 0

Hello friends!!! I’m so glad you’re here.

I’m going to teach you how to make the flower block using the Snowball Technique. If you’d like to see the blog post I did about the Flip-and-Stitch method, you can find it here.

I would love to know what technique you like best, so make sure you leave it in the comment section down below.

Cutting Up Your Jelly Roll

If you want to cut up your jelly roll all at one time, you are welcome to it. From each set of 2 strips, you can make 3 blocks. Lay out the strips and cut the following:

  • 1- 2 1/2″ x 2 1/2″ (A)
  • 1- 2 1/2″ x 4 1/2″ (B)
  • 2- 2 1/2″ x 6 1/2″ (C and D)
  • 1- 2 1/2″ x 8 1/2″ (E)

And

  • 1- 2 1/2″ x 4 1/2″ (B)
  • 1- 2 1/2″ x 6 1/2″ (C)

OR

  • 1- 2 1/2″ x 6 1/2″ (D)
  • 1- 2 1/2″ x 8 1/2″ (E)

(You will cut the first 4 pieces and then pick one of the last two sets per leftover strips. Mix and match fabric strips as desire.)

For each block you’ll need the following pieces:

Cut List

  • Point: 1- 2 1/2″ x 2 1/2″ (A)
  • First round:
    • 1- 2 1/2″ x 4 1/2″ (B)
    • 1- 2 1/2″ x 6 1/2″ (C)
  • Second round:
    • 1- 2 1/2″ x 6 1/2″ (D)
    • 1- 2 1/2″ x 8 1/2″ (E)
  • Background
    • 5- 2 1/2″ x 2 1/2″ (F)
    • 1- 2 1/2″ x 4 1/2″ (G)

Flower Block

It’s time to build your block.

Point of Block

Take A, F, and G to create the point of the block. Lay out in this configuration, press towards background fabric. Trim to 4 1/2″ square.

First Round of Flower Petals

Add the first round to your point block. First attach B, then C. Press towards B or C.

Take 2- F and drawer a diagonal line corner to corner on each.

Place the F pieces on top of B and C, as shown below.

Sew right along the diagonal line. Fold back along stitch line so it lines up with the other corner so it’s nice and neat. Trim off the bottom 2 layers: First round and F.

You have now used the snow ball technique. Trim to 6 1/2″ square.

Second Round of Flower Petals

Add the second round to your flower block by following the above instructions. First attach D, then E. Press towards D or E.

Take 2- F and drawer a diagonal line corner to corner on each.

Place the F pieces on top of D and E. Sew right along the diagonal line. Fold back along stitch line so it lines up with the other corner so it’s nice and neat. Trim off the bottom 2 layers: First round and F.

Trim to 8 1/2″ square.
