Isn’t that a beauty?
I’m getting ready for my first little lady to be born. As I already have 3 boys, it’s time to do something girly. So, after I scoured Pinterest and took into account the room she’d be sharing, I picked some fun colors.
The boys all have red, yellow, and blue, and I wanted it to blend fairly well.
Now here’s a few things I took into account as I was choosing:
- She will be sharing a room with the youngest older brother.
- His room has red and white walls. (Him and I both have a favorite color of red, so I have no problem using it.)
- Brother’s quilt on his bed that his Oma made for him last Christmas is space.
- I wanted to go with bold, not just light and pastel.
I took all of these into account and found this beautiful fabric line: Riley Blake Happy Day. It was bright and girly. It had suns, which went with the space theme, but also had rainbows, flowers, and butterflies in bold beautiful colors.
From this fabric line I came up with my color scheme. I went with red, pink, and yellow. Girly, but also fun!
I armed myself with a 10″ stacker and some yardage of Riley Blake’s Happy Day fabric and got to work designing my nursery and a baby girl quilt.
This particular quilt was not the first one I thought of, but actually my last design, and I love how it is turning out.
The quilt is medallion style, and today I will be sharing with you the center.
We’re going to approach this in two sections, first flower block and then putting four flower blocks together to create the center of the quilt.
Flower Block
Cut List
- 2 1/2″ x 8 1/2″ fabric A
- 2 1/2″ x 6 1/2″ fabric A
- 2 1/2″ x 6 1/2″ fabric B
- 2 1/2″ x 4 1/2″ fabric B
- 2 1/2″ x 2 1/2″ fabric C
- 5- 2 1/2″ x 2 1/2″ white or background fabric
- 2 1/2″ x 4 1/2″ white or background fabric
Start by drawing a diagonal on 4 of the 2 1/2″ x 2 1/2″ white squares. Then put one on each end of the A and B strips.
As you begin to lay them out, you will notice that the points are going to go two different directions.
Sew along diagonal line.
Trim off top triangle, a 1/4″ from the sewing line.
Press towards pattern fabric.
Now repeat with the other colored strips.
Next sew the last 2 1/2″ x 2 1/2″ white square to your fabric C 2 1/2″ x 2 1/2″ square. Press toward C fabric.
Now it’s time to lay it out and start sewing it together.
Sew the C/white square to the 2 1/2″ x 4 1/2″ white strip. Press toward C fabric.
Sew the shorter B fabric to the C side. Press towards the C fabric.
On the long side, sew the the longer B fabric. Press toward the longer B fabric strip.
(FYI, you could do a smaller version of this flower block. The part that’s already sewn is super cute!)
Next, add the shorter A fabric to the bottom. Press toward fabric A.
On the long side, sew the longer A fabric strip. Press toward fabric A and square to 8 1/2″ x 8 1/2″.
Center Medallion
In order to put this quilt together, you need to now make three more of the flower blocks. Note, I used the same fabric C in all four blocks.
Then we’re going to put them all together to form the center.
Cut List
- 2 1/2″ x 2 1/2″ fabric C or some other pattern
- 4- 2 1/2″ x 8 1/2″ white or background fabric
- 2- 2 1/2″ x 18 1/2″ white or background fabric
- 2- 2 1/2″ x 22 1/2″ white or background fabric
Time to lay it out.
We’re going to sew it in rows.
- Sew flower block, 2 1/2″ x 8 1/2″ white strip, and another flower block.
- Sew 2 1/2″ x 8 1/2″ white strip, 2 1/2″ x 2 1/2″ fabric C , and another 2 1/2″ x 8 1/2″ white strip.
- Sew flower block, 2 1/2″ x 8 1/2″ white strip, and another flower block.
- Press toward the white.
Next sew those three rows together. Press toward center.
Next sew a 2 1/2″ x 18 1/2″ white strips to each side. Press toward white strips.
Last, sew 2 1/2″ x 22 1/2″ white strips to the top and bottom. Press towards white strips.
And there it is. Finished and bordered. I think it will make a great beginner to the quilt for the little lady.
Next post will being in the next blocks in the quilt.
