Flying Geese Quilt – Free Quilt Pattern

posted in: Quilt Pattern, Quilting | 0

Hello friends, welcome back! It’s time for another free quilt pattern! This one is fun, and I’m convinced you are going to love it! Don’t be intimidated by the flying geese, but there is a lot of them!

Fabric Requirements

  • 12 Fat Quarters or Scraps
  • 2 yds background

Let’s start by ironing your fat quarters and scraps. Make sure they’re nice and ready to cut into.

Cut List:

  • From Each Fat Quarter:
    • Cut 12- 3 1/4″ x 3 1/4″ squares (A)

Background Cut List:

  • Cut 6- 6″ x wof
    • Subcut into 36- 6″ squares (B)
  • Cut 5- 2.5″ x wof
    • This will be used for the sashing (C)
  • Cut 5- 3″ x wof
    • This will be used for the final border (D)

Flying Geese

We are going to make 36 sets of Flying Geese using the No-Waste Flying Geese method. What’s fun about these ones is that they will have different fabric for each of the legs.

First, take 1- B and 4- A, make sure there are 4 different A fabrics, and make four A/B Flying Geese. Trim to 2 3/4″ x 5″.

Start by drawing a line corner to corner of A. We are going to pin two of these on B so there is one continuous line from corner to corner of B. Make sure you are using 2 different A fabrics. The pattern fabric should overlap in the middle.

Sew 1/4” along each side of the drawn line.

Trim on the drawn line and press toward A. (You should now be working with two different pieces.)

When it’s all pressed it should look like a heart with the background as the bottom point and the pattern fabric as the top edges.

Place another A on each of the pieces so it lines up with the last background corner edges and the drawn line runs down the center of the heart. Once again, make sure you pick a different pattern fabric, we don’t want them to look at all alike.

Sew 1/4” down each side of the line on both pieces.

Cut on the drawn line and press toward A.

Trim to 2 3/4″ x 5″. Repeat until you have 144 flying geese.

Create Row Groups

For each row you will need 24 flying geese.

Sew each row together pressing toward the background fabric of the flying geese.

Each row should measure 5″ x 55 1/2″.

Flying Geese Quilt

Take C and sew them together, end to end, to make one long strip. From this strip, cut 5 that are 55 1/2″. (Sashing)

Take D and sew 3 of the strips together, end to end, to make one long strip. From this strip, cut 2 that 55 1/2″.

Lay out your quilt so that each row is running vertical and place a sashing strip between each row.

Sew them together, pressing towards the Sashing.

Tip: when you go to sew your rows together, you want your flying geese seams to line up horizontally on your quilt.

Pull back the edge of your row until you can see if the flying geese are lining up.

Once you’ve done this, fold it back down and place a pin. It might not be perfectly line up, but it will be close.

Once you have all the rows sewn together, sew the 55 1/2″ D strips to the sides of the quilt, and then the last two D strips to the top and bottom of the quilt.

Finished size: 43″ x 61 1/2″.

Finishing Your Quilt

Pick out your quilt back and batting and either quilt on your home machine or send it to the long-arm quilter.

Bind your quilt and the snuggle underneath it!
