Hello friends, welcome back! It’s time for another free quilt pattern! This one is fun, and I’m convinced you are going to love it!

Fabric Requirements
- Layer cake or 40- 10″ squares (I’m using Holiday Essentials Halloween by Stacy Iest Hsu)
- 3 1/2 yds background
- 1 yd of contrasting fabric
- 2/3 yd for binding
Let’s start with our layer cake. We need 40 squares. So find 2 squares to take out. In my layer cake I have 20 different prints, so 2 of them had a third square in those prints. Those are the two I removed from my layer cake. You want this to be bright and since I’m using a white for my background, I didn’t want it to blend it with my background.
Divide those 40 squares into two piles.
One pile of 20 for the star points (A) and one pile of 20 for the center of the star.
Pair up the center star squares so you have a pile of 10 with two contracting fabrics paired together. (B and C)
Cut List:

8-at-a-Time Half-Square Triangles – Set 1
Take one A and one D and place them right sides together.
Draw corner-to-corner diagonally both directions. (It should look like an X) Pin the pieces together away from the lines, so they don’t slip.

Sew 1/4″ down each side of the drawn lines.

Take to your cutting mat and we will be making 4 cuts. One down each of the diagonal lines you just sewed on each side. And then in half vertically and horizontally.

After the 4 cuts, you should have 8 triangles.
Take to the ironing board, press towards dark side and trim to 4 1/2″ square (A/D).
If you need additional information about making 8-at-a-time HST, check out this post.

Now that we’ve done all the prep work, it’s time to pair our pieces up to decide which we want in each block.
In each block, you will need 3 different sets of HST. You don’t want these sets to match, so make sure you use a variety of different colors and styles.

Additional fabric required would be 5/8 yd.
Subcut into 8- 2.5″ x wof. Sew fabric together so you have one long strip. And cut into:
- 2- 91″
- 2-77″
Sew the 91″ to the side, press toward final border and the 77″ to the top and bottom pressing toward the final border.
Finished size should be 77″ x 95″.
