Today I’m sharing with you the Megan Quilt, named after my niece whom I decided to make the original quilt for. Though I don’t remember the original quilt, this heart block and 9-patch block were designed for that quilt, and today we’re putting it all together with the Sawtooth Star block.
Megan Quilt
Each of the blocks seemed to have come out a different size, so we are going to start by making them all the same size. The heart block was written as a 14 1/2″ x 14 1/2″, but my block is actually 8 1/2″ x 8 1/2″.
Heart Block
Cut List
- 8- 2 1/2″ x 8 1/2″ fabric A
- 8- 2 1/2″ x 12 1/2″ fabric A
- 8- 2 1/2″ x 8 1/2″ fabric B
- 8- 2 1/2″ x 12 1/2″ fabric B
Using fabric A, take 4 of your heart blocks and sew the shorter strip on opposite sides of the block. Press toward fabric A.
Then sew the longer strip on the other two sides, press toward fabric A.
Repeat with fabric B on the other 4 heart blocks.
Trim finished blocks to 12 1/2″ x 12 1/2″.
9-Patch Block
Cut List
- 8- 1 1/2″ x 10 1/2″ fabric C
- 8- 1 1/2″ x 12 1/2″ fabric C
Repeat steps above with fabric C and the 9-patch block. Press and trim to 12 1/2″ x 12 1/2″.
Sawtooth Star Block
Cut List
- 8- 1 1/2″ x 10 1/2″ fabric D (Sawtooth Star block)
- 8- 1 1/2″ x 12 1/2″ fabric D (Sawtooth Star block)
Repeat steps above with fabric C and the 9-patch block. Press and trim to 12 1/2″ x 12 1/2″.
Finishing
Cut List
- 2- 2 1/2″ x 48 1/2″ white fabric
- 2- 2 1/2″ x 52 1/2″ white fabric
- 2- 4 1/2″ x 52 1/2″ border fabric
- 2- 4 1/2″ x 60 1/2″ border fabric
Now that all the blocks are 12 1/2″ x 12 1/2″, we can lay the quilt out.
Sew the blocks together into rows and then the rows together.
Sew the white 48 1/2″ fabric on opposite sides of the quilt. Press toward white fabric. Then sew the white 52 1/2″ fabric to the other two sides, press toward white fabric.
Sew the border 52 1/2″ fabric on opposite sides of the quilt, press toward border fabric. Then sew the border 60 1/2″ fabric to the other two sides, press toward border fabric.
Now it’s time to finish and quilt. I wanted to use minky fabric for the back so that it’ll be nice and soft for this little lady.
Trim your minky fabric to be the same size as the quilt top, then lay your minky fabric out with right side up. Lay the quilt top on top with the right side down. Pin edges all the way around.
Here are some good tutorials on how to sew a minky-backed blanket: this and this. I liked the second one better, but the pictures seemed to be missing. Just follow the tutorial, pin, sew, flip it right-side-out, and then top stitch around the edges.
Now that the edges are all sewn together, it’s time to quilt the top. I didn’t do a lot, I just wanted to quilt it enough to keep the front and back together. So I just sewed a half inch inside each of the block borders.
And then I sewed inside the outside border.
This is how it looks on the front and back. So it’s now completed and you have a beautiful quilt with a nice soft back.
Now go make yourself a Megan Quilt.
