Patriotic Star Quilt

posted in: Quilt Pattern, Quilting | 0

Hello friends, welcome back! It’s time for another free quilt pattern! This one is fun, and I’m convinced you are going to love it!

Fabric Requirements

  • Layer cake or 40- 10″ squares (I’m using Star Spangled by April Rosenthal)
  • 3 yds background (cut into 40- 10″ Squares) or Background fabric layer cake
  • 1/2 yd for binding

Let’s start with our layer cake. We need 40 squares. So find 2 squares to take out. I removed a white on white and a low volume one. You want this to be bright and since I’m using a white for my background, I didn’t want it to blend it with my background.

These squares are A.

Background Cut List:

  • Cut 10- 10″ x wof
    • Subcut into 40- 10″ squares (B)

8-at-a-Time Half-Square Triangles

Take one A and one B and place them right sides together.

Draw corner-to-corner diagonally both directions. (It should look like an X) Pin the pieces together away from the lines, so they don’t slip.

Sew 1/4″ down each side of the drawn lines.

Take to your cutting mat and we will be making 4 cuts. One down each of the diagonal lines you just sewed on each side. And then in half vertically and horizontally.

After the 4 cuts, you should have 8 triangles.

Take to the ironing board, press towards dark side and trim to 4 1/2″ square (HST).

If you need additional information about making 8-at-a-time HST, check out this post.

Create Block Groups

Now that we’ve done all the prep work, it’s time to pair our pieces up to decide which we want in each block.

In each block, you will need 3 different sets of HST. You don’t want these sets to match, so make sure you use a variety of different colors and styles.

  • 4- HST that match (C)
  • 4- HST that match (D)
  • 8- HST that match (E)

Star Block

Layout your block like below. We are creating a 4×4 layout.

Sew each row together and press each row in the opposite direction.

Then sew all the rows together and press. Block should measure 16 1/2″

Create 20 blocks.

Patriotic Star Quilt

Lay your quilt out in a 4 x 5 pattern.

Sew the rows together, pressing each row in the opposite directions. Sew the rows together and then give your quilt to a a good press before sending it off to your long arm quilter.

Finishing Your Quilt

Pick out your quilt back and batting and either quilt on your home machine or send it to the long-arm quilter.

Bind your quilt and the snuggle underneath it!
